March 14, 1899, overcast and cloudy with heavy squalls and a gale blowing from the west. Rough sea, Course S 80° W.  Barometer rising. Took deep-sea soundings nearly all morning. Sea decreasing as land was approached. 9:30 mustered at quarters. At 10:00 sighted land ahead of port bow. Set clock back 20 minutes at 12:15 we entered the Straits of Magellan. At 2:35 sight rain on Possession Point. Standing in for anchorage in Possession Bay at 2:45. Passed a Lambert and Holt steamer flying British colors – hoisted own colors and answered her salute – at 3:20 called "all hands bring ship to anchor", at 4:00 came to in 9 1/2 fms. of water, with starboard anchor, veering to 75 fms. chain. Toward evening, very cool, but clear. No houses in sight. A desolate looking place. High hills on one side, and the Andes Mountains on the other. Wrote to J. 

Lat at noon DR 52° 39' S. 

Long at noon DR 68° 16' W.


Clifford (Drummer) was placed in double irons – 5 days confinement, for insolence to 1st Serg't.
