At 12:25 changed course to S 80° W. At 2:30 sighted a large 4 masted bark bound south. At 6:00 PM, the barometer started falling. Mustered crew at quarters. at 6:30 fresh to stiff breeze increasing to moderate gale – Sea rough. At 8 o'clock overcast and cloudy -  at 12 midnight clear. Squalls of wind and rain between 10 and 12. At 12:30 AM, gale blowing in all its fury. I don't want anyone to think I stayed awake all night to find out these things – oh no – I've friends who stand night watches, and they let me know all about it. Seas very rough – as I write, I can hear someone outside my office having an argument with his stomach. Lots of flu when he gets on the weather side, and gets it in the face – wow – Fun for us, but not for him.
