March 9, 1899, Cloudy, cool and damp. Started to rain about 8 o'clock. Mustered at quarters at 9:30 and had company drill. At 10:15 the Commanding Officer of HMS Flora visited our Captain – with him came Commander Norcock with his aid. Fired a salute of 11 guns, the British flag at the fore in honor of the Commodore. At 11:20 our Captain made an official visit to the Governor of the Island. Governor returned the visit in the afternoon. Fired a 17 gun salute as he left the ship (W. Gray Wilson) Visited the Flagship Flora, and had a fair time, the crew were very obliging. The American Council’s son (James Rowan) came into my office and we had quite a chat on different subjects. Stopped raining. Came back from English ship at 9:00 and wrote to J.- also wrote to L. – Very fine evening – I am awake until 10:45 reading "The Deserter”
