May 4th Clear and pleasant. Steamer “Morgan City” with troops on board came into the harbor. (Left Frisco 5 days before Badger) and went alongside of wharf. All hands coaling ship. Barometer steady. 

Wrote to L. Went swimming. 


May 5th Clear and pleasant. The “Captic” came in (mail steamer): Coaling ship by watches. The Government band in a tug serenaded the Joint High Commissioners on the vessel: this courtesy was extended by the Hawaiian Government. At 11:45 the transport "Newport" left with troupes for Manila. At 3:00 finished coaling and pilot came on board at same time. At 3:15 called all hands unmoor ship. At 3:30 got underway and proceeded out of the harbor. At 4:00 pilot left ship, abreast harbor entrance. Smooth sea. Barometer rising. Passing rain showers during evening.


May 6. Partly cloudy and pleasant. Long rolling swell. Set clocks back 5 minutes. Set forestay sail and main try sail. Had evening quarters and exercised of physical drill. Ship rolling badly.
