April 28, 1899, overcast and cloudy. Long rolling swells. On sails set. Ship rolling badly. Barometer steady. Had quarters and exercised at 22 cal target practice. Took in all sails at 8:30. Stoddart reported term of enlistment expired. Set clocks back 26 minutes. Cloudy and cool towards evening. Moderate sea on starboard quarter. Stoddart was discharged from the Naval Service.

April 29, 1899, overcast and cloudy. Barometer steady. Drizzling rain early part of morning. Smooth sea. Set clocks back 22 minutes. Specifications were handed to 17 accused of leaving ship without permission. Had quarters at 4:15. Physical drill. Stoddart enlisted as a seaman for four years. Cloudy but pleasant towards evening.

April 30, 1899, Cloudy and pleasant. Smooth sea. Ship rolling easily. Rain towards noon time. Ship was inspected by Commanding Officer at morning quarters. Set clocks back 19 minutes. Barometer steady.

While playing a game of whist, was sent for by the Captain and asked could I not get a crowd together tomorrow evening for the amusement of the Samoan Commissioners. I replied that "I'd try"

February 6, 1899, Cloudy and pleasant. Course changed at noon to S.E. Crew mustered at quarters. Exercised at "setting up" drill. Tested search light and found it in unsatisfactory order. Electric control and automatic feed were out of order.   Lat 21° 42' N - at noon DR   Long 58° 01' W - at noon DR Distance traveled since noon February 5, 299 miles. Wrote to J February 7, 1899, clear and pleasant. Fresh breeze to E.N.E On course. S.E.(psc) At 9:30 AM, mustered at quarters. Battalion organized. At 10:20 sail was sighted. Choppy sea. Shifting coal from forehold to bunker. Secured out hammocks. Light showers from passing clouds between 7 and 8 PM – I was today given instructions, that during action, fire or collision drill, general quarters, clear ship for action.
