May 12, 1899. Clear and pleasant. Smooth sea. Took in all sail. At 8:30 slowed down to swing ship. Finished at 9:55. Both watches employed shifting coal. Set clocks back 4 minutes. Clear and warm toward evening. Barometer steady. Calm – no breeze – 

Lat 10° 20' S.

Long 169° 37' W.


May 13. Clear and pleasant. At 6:05 sighted Molunu Id. At 6:25 entrance to Apia Harbor was sighted. At 7:30 took pilot aboard at entrance of harbor. At 7:41 anchored. Let go both anchor and moored ship. Found in port the USS Flagship Philadelphia and the USS Collier “Brutues" - also HM ships “Tauranga”, “Porpoise” and “Torch” – also the German Cruiser ‘Falke”. Fired a salute of 13 guns upon anchoring,  in honor of Rear Admiral Katz. Received boarding visits from H.M. ships and German – Returned same. 

9:30 Rear Admiral Katz came onboard. U.S. Consul paid an official visit – Commissioners visited all the public vessels in the harbor, and upon their departure a salute of 15 guns were fired from each vessel. ‘Flagship’ made signal "Allow no liberty" Chief Justice of Samoa came aboard, and upon his leaving fired a salute of 7 guns. At 2:45 pilot came aboard, and we again shifted our berth closer to Flagship.
