June 17. Clear but damp. Barometer still falling at 8:30 the Norwegian Barque "Sappho" left the harbor. At 12:37 SMS "Cormoran" fired a salute of 7 guns and broke German flag at the fore. The Commissioners visited the "Cormoran" and upon their departure at 4:20 at salute of 15 guns were fired with the German, British and American flags at fore – Toward evening cool – Barometer rising – went swimming from ship. Went ashore at 8:00 PM with doctor.

June 18. Clear and cool with light airs. At 7:40 HMS. "Torch" Left the harbor. Had General Muster and "Articles of War "were read. At 8:30 sent ashore a funeral escort of 18 men to assist at the funeral of one of the men of the cruise "Cormoran" who was drowned the evening of their arrival, and found next morning. The colors were half-masted during the funeral. Sent ashore a liberty party and some had to be carried on board – utterly helpless – went swimming at 5:00 and at 8:00. I went ashore with doctor.

Since our arrival here we have attended 3 funerals - Two Englishman died from fever – one American fell overboard and was drowned – body never recovered – one German drowned, but body recovered. Seems to be a bad place.
